Mobile-First website. The must-have for any serious business in 2018.

 

Before the details on Mobile-first website,  you may want to learn about Google punishing websites that is non-SSL.

Google will soon ‘award’ such a site with a Not secure label next to the URL.

Before many can pause to decide to get the SSL or not, Google is announcing their plans for 2018 and beyond.

In summary, Google will ignore sites that are NOT Mobile-First.

It will:

“eventually primarily use the mobile version of a site’s content to rank pages from that site, to understand structured data, and to show snippets from those pages in our results”

How is it going to hurt us? 

If your website is NOT built with mobile in mind, that means eventually; Google will put your website on the digital back burner.

It will first display all your competitors’ mobile-first websites before searching for your desktop-only sites.

Why is this happening?

Google wants the best user experience possible.

Mobile internet usage has been increasing, while desktop has dropped below mobile.

Thus, it’s natural for Google to mould the search engine that serves the majority.

If you want to dig deeper, my guess is:

Google’s closest ad competitor is Facebook. If Google doesn’t do its role well as the gatekeeper to usable sites, the crowd may just rely on Facebook for all the content needs.

Who will be affected?

As long as your site does not pass the Google mobile-friendly test, you are hit.

 

So what now? 

  1. Your website MUST be built for mobile users in mind, FIRST.
  2. If you have a mobile site, it should not be a dumbed down version of your desktop site.
  3. Make sure all elements of your site are discoverable on mobile.
  4. Make sure that meta descriptions, structured data, tags, etc. are all set up the same on mobile as they are on desktop
  5. Rollout is probably targeted in early 2018
